The Mental Health Center of Passaic is proud to share the following tribute for Dr. Sybil Schreiber:
NJAMHAA (New Jersey Association of Mental Health & Addiction Agencies) is deeply saddened to have learned of the passing of Sybil M. Schreiber, LCSW, DSW, the esteemed Executive Director of the Mental Health Center of Passaic and a cherished member of NJAMHAA. Sybil passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024, at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the mental health community. Dr. Schreiber’s career was marked by her passionate advocacy and tireless efforts to improve mental health services in Passaic County and beyond. As the longtime Executive Director of the Mental Health Center of Passaic, she led with integrity and vision, transforming countless lives through her compassionate care and innovative programs. Her leadership extended far beyond her organization, and she was an invaluable member of NJAMHAA and her community.
An active participant in NJAMHAA, Sybil’s contributions were instrumental in shaping policies and initiatives that benefited the entire mental health sector. Her insights and collaborative spirit were deeply valued, and she was always a trusted voice on which NJAMHAA could rely.
Dr. Schreiber’s passing is a significant loss to all who knew her, and her legacy of service, leadership, and compassion will continue to inspire everyone. In honoring her memory, NJAMHAA remains committed to advancing the causes she cared so deeply about. Dr. Schreiber’s spirit will live on through the continued work of the Mental Health Center of Passaic, NJAMHAA, and the many lives she impacted throughout her distinguished career.
“Sybil’s unwavering dedication and compassionate leadership have left an indelible mark on our community. Her contributions to NJAMHAA and the field of mental health will be remembered and cherished,” said NJAMHAA President and CEO, Debra L. Wentz, PhD. “Though very soft spoken, Sybil was an amazing advocate. An active participant on our Adult Mental Health Practice Group and Education Council for many years, she had tremendous input into our advocacy with her expertise that she developed throughout an extraordinary career. Sybil was also a tremendous role model of remarkable compassion and dedication to both her staff and every individual she and her team have served over the years. We will miss Sybil tremendously and we send heartfelt condolences to her friends, families, and other colleagues.”
Dr. Schreiber was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Helen Cohen, and her beloved husband Gary. She is survived by her niece Andrea Dobin and her children, Grant and Nina, as well as her nephew Marc Dobin and his children, Alex (Ashley and their daughter Everly) and Michele (Eric) and countless cousins who remember her fondly.
Shiva was observed at Sybil’s former residence in Montvale, New Jersey following the burial on Thursday, May 9, 2024.
